The Daily Momtivity Moms have discovered something awesome! We can easily make our own hummus without having to purchase ingredients that are not staples in our pantry (like tahini?).
We had a lot of fun this week making our own hummus and experimenting with new ways to use it. Our families loved being our guinea pigs. You all know by now that we’re the kind of Moms who are only looking for easy, healthy, family-friendly recipes. This stuff totally fits that criteria. Check out our recipes!
Shannon: Hummus is a regular item on my grocery list, but I decided to let my kids in on the action to make our own using Bush’s Hummus Made Easy packets. You can find them in the bean aisle of your local Walmart store. They come in three great flavors! All you do is mix a pack with a can of Bush’s Garbanzo beans in a blender or food processor and you’ve got yourself a great healthy snack or lunch ready to go. It’s that easy!
Recently I had the kids help prep lunch. They’re a huge fan of beans. They love making their own bean/cheese burritos so I knew that Bush’s Southwest Black Bean Hummus would be a hit! The kids loved blending the mix and beans together. In just a few seconds we had a yummy bean dip that everyone loved! Luckily it was lunch time so we spread some on tortillas and made a great Black Bean Hummus Lunch Wrap! My kids filled their bellies with good proteins and they wanted more. My daughter helped make some roll-ups for the upcoming week of school too. We can take one out on mornings and it will be ready for her lunch that day.
We made a great veggie snack too with the regular flavored hummus. My daughter is always STARVING after soccer and these travel well and were a healthy alternative to the sugary snacks served after most games. The 3 year old even loved them for a snack too!
I decided to make an afternoon snack with the black bean hummus, and ate it with carrots. It was fabulous!! I can’t wait until we make more of this stuff!

Nicole: My family likes hummus, but we’ve only ever used it as a dip. It occurred to me that we could also use it as a spread or topping, in lieu of higher fat, less healthy things like mayonnaise and ranch dressing. (Don’t get me wrong…I love both of those things, and in moderation, they’re fine. But since we love hummus, it’s an easy swap and we get points for being a healthier family! Yay!)
Hummus swap #1:
Grilled Chicken Sandwich on a toasted bun, with Bush’s Original Flavor Hummus spread, spinach leaves and carrots. Also consider adding: tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese
The swap: Use original flavor hummus instead of mayonnaise or honey dijon.
Verdict: Hubby loved it!
Hummus swap #2:
Quesadillas with Bush’s Black Bean Hummus, shredded cheese, shredded chicken, tomatoes, spinach leaves. Also consider adding: bell peppers, onions
The swap: Use black bean hummus instead of refried beans or sour cream.
Verdict: The black bean hummus and veggies add texture and moisture to otherwise boring cheese quesadillas. These are so, so, SO good!! I’m kind of proud of this one.
Hummus swap #3:
Turkey deli meat on whole grain bread with Bush’s Red Pepper Hummus spread, cucumber and tomatoes. Also consider adding: lettuce, cheese
The swap: Use red pepper flavor hummus instead of mayonnaise.
Verdict: Yes, please! The red pepper hummus adds a whole new spin on the turkey sandwich. So good!
The Hummus Made Easy packs create a pretty large portion of hummus, so we have plenty of leftovers for more meals and snacks this week. That’s always a plus. Go grab some, and try it!

We are completely obsessed with hummus in our family! My boys take hummus and cucumber pita sandwiches to school. My SIL made those adorable little hummus cups for my nephew’s bday party! It was so smart!

This looks great! Hummus is always on my list since I have so many food sensitivities and this is one I can eat. I will be checking my local Wal-Mart to see if they carry it. Thank you!
