Summer vacation started a couple of weeks ago, and we eagerly began swimming nearly every day, going on special outings, and staying up late sometimes. We went to a party, had a dance recital, and a fun sleepover with Grammy. We’re only 2 weeks into this summer and my girls are TIRED!
It’s all just fun and play, so you’d think the kids would be thriving, energy-wise, but actually, these girls are zapped! There have been more tantrums, more sass, and a lot of yawns. It’s time for a quiet day. As much energy as children have, I’m a firm believer that they also need mellow days. Today is a perfect day for that, because it’s overcast outside. On a day like this, I don’t mind at all if the kids watch a lot of TV, or play on the iPad. They refuse to nap, so as far as I’m concerned, vegging out in that way is the next best thing. I’ll encourage them to read, color, and maybe I’ll break out a couple of board games or puzzles that we haven’t played with in ages. I am going to set the expectation that they play with the 4,327 toys that they own. Dress-up clothes, Barbies, Legos… Find them, and have fun.
Here’s what I’m NOT going to do. I’m NOT going to get dressed. I’m NOT going to make any promises about where we’ll go or what we’ll do today. I am NOT going to apply sunscreen on anyone today. I’m NOT going to get Pinteresty and make crafts with the kids. And I’m not going to bake cookies or make DIY Gak today.
I AM going to catch up a couple of chores, do a little Amazon shopping and read my People magazine while the girls play independently and the baby naps. (Crossing my fingers that those last two things happen simultaneously.)
We’re going to lay low. All of us. I’m sure there will be a few fights to break up, a couple of tantrums, and at least once someone will say they’re bored. We’ll still have diapers to change and lunches to make, but otherwise we’ll be schedule-free, and in our jammies all day. It will be glorious.
Happy Quiet Day! (Wish me luck that this goes my way today…)

Overcast, rain threatening skies are my guilty pleasure. I wait all winter for the nice weather and I’m just riddled with guilt if spend a single moment of sunshine indoors. Those overcast days at least give me an excuse to stay inside and veg out. I love those lazy days. 🙂
I hope you and your family enjoyed yours and that you were about to find a lil’ well-deserved mommy time. 🙂

Aww, thank you! And I completely agree with you about overcast days – they are the BEST days for pajamas, movies and downtime. And bonus – sometimes those dark skies actually result in the kids sleeping in a little longer! Thanks for reading! -Nicole

Yay for taking care of you! I was just writing about the need for rest and balance this week – seems esp. true in the summer time. Here’s to People and down time!

Yes, Cheers to that! Thank you for reading! – Nicole

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. We all just need one day to do nothing! I am constantly doing something with or for the kids on a daily basis and there are days when I just don’t want to “Adult”. I want to lay in bed and watch movies with them all day, stay in our pj’s and veg out. I don’t want to look at my phone. Popcorn for breakfast? Sounds good to me! That’s the day I want to have. I hope you get more “do nothing” days this summer!
