Now that spring is almost here, it’s time to some cleaning up around the house. It’s important to do some yearly checks and maintenance to keep your house or apartment running smoothly. Here are some spring cleaning tips for your house to help you prepare for spring and summer.
Change Batteries in All Smoke Alarms
If you like to stick to a semiannual schedule, then now is the time to change batteries in your smoke alarms. Even if the batteries seem to be okay, it’s best to change them out. Since we just had a daylight savings time change and it almost springtime, this is the perfect time to refresh those batteries. This will give you peace of mind, knowing your smoke alarms are in good working order.
Change the Air Filters
This is a biggie. Sometimes we forget to do this, but right now is a great time to switch out the HVAC air filter before it gets too hot. We always try and buy our air filters for the year, and we change them twice a year according to the directions. If you don’t change your filters often enough, that can lead to more allergens and yucky stuff in your air. Do you have children that have allergies or asthma? Changing your HVAC system’s air filters is one of the most highly recommended steps to help with asthma.
Clean Out the Chimney
Now that winter is over and the days are getting warmer, clean up the chimney and get it all nice again. Get your flue checked and in proper working order. This can be a messy job, but it’s much needed, especially after a cold winter.
Clean the Vacuum
I know it sounds crazy, but vacuums needed to be cleaned and maintained, too. How often do you vacuum? Luckily, I don’t have a whole bunch of carpet. We are slowly removing it from our house due to terrible allergies, but we still do a big weekly vacuuming session. We don’t have any pets, but kids and shoes do track dirt into the house. To clean the vacuum, take the filter out and give it a good scrub. Clean out the brushes and get them all nice again.
Dust and Clean the House
After you’ve done a few of the above ideas, you might notice more dust around the house. This is a good time to clean up, and it’s a great way to get the whole family involved, too. Do some deep cleaning, and clean the baseboards along with the blinds. Now that it’s spring, you’ll want to have the shades up and the blinds open, so make sure everything looks shiny and clean. Wash those windows, too! You will want a clear view of the spring blooms outside, and having clean windows will be a nice change.
Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the cool mornings and warmer afternoons, and there’s nothing better than a clean house. If you follow the above tips, you’ll be set to enjoy the wonderful spring.
