Beach Hacks for Kids
A beach day with little kids can be pure magic — or a sandy, sunburned meltdown. The difference usually comes down to a handful of small tricks. After hauling my crew across more shorelines than I can count, these are the beach hacks I’d never go without.
Win the war on sand
- Baby powder is magic. A light sprinkle of cornstarch-based baby powder makes dried sand brush right off skin. Dust hands and feet before getting in the car.
- Bring a fitted sheet. Lay one down and weigh the four corners with your bag, cooler, and shoes — instant sand-free play zone with raised edges.
- Pack a mesh laundry bag for toys. Sand falls right through the holes, so buckets and shovels go home (mostly) clean.
Smart packing moves
- Freeze your water bottles. They keep the cooler cold on the way there and turn into ice-cold drinks by lunchtime — double duty, less to carry.
- Use a muffin tin or cupcake liners for snacks. Easy to hand out, hard to spill, and toddler-friendly.
- Stash your phone in a zip-top bag. Cheap, waterproof enough for a beach bag, and you can still take photos through it.
- Bring a pop-up tent. Shade for babies, a nap spot for toddlers, and a break from the sun for everyone.
Keep everyone safe and happy
- Sunscreen before you leave home. Apply the first coat dry and calm at the house, then just reapply at the beach.
- Dress kids in bright swimsuits. Bold colors are far easier to spot in the water than blue or green.
- Snap a “morning of” photo of each kid. If anyone wanders, you have an instant, accurate description of what they’re wearing.
- Pick a family meeting landmark. A lifeguard tower or pier makes a clear “find us here” spot for older kids.
Master a few of these and the beach goes from stressful to genuinely fun — the kind of day everyone wants to repeat. Planning more outings this summer? Browse our family travel ideas for more kid-tested adventures.
