Over the last 3 months, my kids have been working really hard at Explore Horizons to become fearless learners. What is a fearless learner? I can’t wait to tell you all about it. First, here’s a little more about what Explore Horizons is and what happens there.
What is Explore Horizons?
Explore Horizons is a tutoring and enrichment program that provides instruction in reading, writing, and math. They serve children in PreK through 8th grade. Their program aligns with the Texas curriculum to keep the students on track per grade level. It’s also not just for students that are behind but very much a place where students can get ahead or a place where they can go for a challenge. They work with students of all stages and ability levels too! It’s a wonderful place to get ahead or challenge children as well!
What Happens at Explore Horizons
At the first appointment, your child will do an initial assessment to establish the best academic starting point for their math and reading. This process is done using a combination of parent feedback as well as manager interaction and observation of your children completing math and language arts problems, some of which are presented on the computer. Afterwards, the parent has a short meeting to go over the initial assessment results and to discuss their recommendations for how Explore Horizons will start off your child’s fearless learning plan. Of course, this is only the beginning. They will explain that over the next few months your children will be assessed on an ongoing basis, so that in your first 1-1 parent feedback meeting you’ll really find out how your child is performing in specific skill areas within the math, reading and writing curriculum. You also do a tour of the center and to see how it’s run and what happens at a normal session. A personalized plan will be set up for your child for the next time they visit.
After that, your child will be able to come for a session without an appointment! Parents are able to drop off at any convenient time during normal business hours. Kids can come up to 8 sessions per month.
Each session lasts about 60 minutes of personalized instruction. Tutors are available and set up in each pod area so they help students with areas of difficulty and provide them with praise and encouragement as needed.
After each session, students get some time to recharge. This is a time where they take a break by playing a game with other students or staff. It’s a great way to wrap up their session or prepare for the next one!
How Fearless Learners Are Made
When you walk into a center, you will see fearless learners everywhere. Students are hard at work learning and exploring, challenging themselves to gain more knowledge. I saw this first hand with my 2 kids at every session.
My kids are at very different learning levels but they both grew leaps and bounds in both academic areas as well as self-confidence. Explore Horizons has taught my kids how to face some challenging situations academically (in reading and math) and gave them the skills to solve these problems.
During my 2nd 1-1 parent meeting I got amazing results about both of my kid’s academic progress. It’s so nice to have a meeting and hear progress and also hear some things they need to work on as well.
My 5th grader (soon to be 6th grader) is doing pretty hard work in school. With support, she grew 6 months ahead of her grade level in math and reading giving her a huge head start for 6th grade! She also gained tons of self-confidence to start her journey of middle school! I’m so proud of her!
My youngest (just finishing Kinder!) learned so much in 3 months at Explore Horizons. He was only 5 when he started as a fearless learner, but he quickly caught on and loved the program. He did 30 minutes of math and 30 minutes of reading each session. He gained all the background knowledge to help him become the best reader he can be as he will start 1st grade soon.
Final Thoughts on Explore Horizons
As a parent, I loved my kids attending sessions. It is so convenient as it’s a drop-off service. We could go anytime during their business hours and no appointments are needed. They are open year round, 7 days a week! At each session I got great parent/tutor communication to see what my kids were working on. There was so much continuous positive reinforcement from everyone at the center that my kids wanted to come back. I loved the overall uplifting atmosphere and all the learning that was taking place!
Explore Horizons has 6 convenient locations across the DFW area. Schedule a free assessment at your nearest center.
