As I thumbed through my latest Every Day with Rachel Ray Magazine, I came upon a cute 3 page spread about a little girl cooking with Elmo. Together they made “Elmo’s Famous Chili”. From there I decided to look online for more info about this little Muppet’s cooking skills, and apparently, he has a number of kid-friendly recipes. But what’s more…all of his friends on Sesame Street have recipes to share as well.
I’m probably the last to know about this, but frankly…my kids have never been huge Sesame Street fans, so I’m a little behind on my Big Bird and Friends themes. Apparently, they all enjoy cooking.
I skimmed the cute recipes for you and will share 2 of my favorites below. Later, visit Sesame Street’s recipe page to view them all. Let your kiddos explore the page and tell you which ones look the tastiest/most fun to make, and go for it! It’s all very cute. There are step-by-step kid-friendly instructions, with “I can help” notations, indicating which steps are perfect for little helpers.
Zoe’s Appletizing Apple Dip
Ingredients
2 apples (different varieties)
1 cup vanilla yogurt
cinnamon
1/2 cup whole grain cereal O’s or granola (optional)
Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: None
Makes: 3 cups
Place ½ cup of whole grain cereal between two paper towels.
Ask your child to help crush the O’s between the paper towels with her hands or the back of a large spoon. Place crushed O’s in a small bowl.
In another small bowl, make the dip by stirring together the vanilla yogurt and a dash of cinnamon.
Wash the apples and cut them into slices. Adults should do the cutting.
Help your child arrange the apple slices in the bowl, then sprinkle the crushed O’s on top of the yogurt dip.
Dip in and enjoy your delicious, healthy snack together!
Elmo’s Double Double Baked Baked Potatoes
Ingredients
2 large Idaho potatoes
4 tablespoons low-fat or fat-free ranch dressing
4 tablespoons low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
8 stalks broccoli steamed and chopped
Wash and scrub your potatoes under cold water. Then use a fork to punch holes in them for steam to escape while baking. Cook the potatoes in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour or until done.
Boil ¼ inch water in a frying pan. Wash the broccoli and cook it in the covered pan for 5 to 8 minutes until tender. Chop the broccoli into small pieces and put aside to use later. (Daily Momtivity hack: Use Steamfresh Microwaveable Broccoli instead!)
Remove the potatoes from the oven and allow them to sit until they are cool enough for you and your child to handle. Slice each potato in half length-wise.
Use a spoon to scoop out the inside of each potato half. Put the scooped potato into a mixing bowl. Put the skins aside to use later.
Add the ranch dressing to the potatoes in the bowl. Using an electric mixer or a potato masher, mix until smooth. Stir in the broccoli you prepared earlier.
Fill each of your potato skins about half way up with the potato mixture. Sprinkle one tablespoon of cheese on each half. Put your potato skins on a cookie tray and return to the oven. Bake at 350 degrees until the cheese is melted and slightly brown on top.
Have fun cooking with your little chefs!
