Here in North Texas the Spring weather is very unpredictable. We’ve had a lot of bad weather lately so I decided it was probably a good idea to get a safe room ‘supply’ bag ready. It only took a few minutes to put together.
Now I know in true emergencies you might not have time to even get to your safe area. I decided to go ahead and stock up on a few necessities that we would need if we did find ourselves in our safe room for some sort of time. Our safe area in this house is the kids’/guest bathroom. There are no windows and there’s a tub we can get in if needed. I grabbed a bag I don’t use much and started rummaging around the house for supplies. This took less than 5 minutes to put together!
Here’s what I packed:
Flashlights. (These are a must. We can NEVER find these when needed! Also extra batteries)
Water: Bottled water is easy
Non perishables: I grabbed some apple sauce, tuna, and granola bars
Diapers/Wipes: Just a few for the 2 year old
Things I’m going to Add for next time:
$$ Not too much but just a little if we needed it
Pair of shoes for each kid and a change of clothes
First aid supplies
Towel or blanket
Book or stickers for kids (to pass the time)
Trinket toys
This bag would also be a great thing to put in your car. I might make a 2nd one and store it in my car for those just in case times. I’m going to keep my emergency bag in our bathroom cabinet. I hope we NEVER have to use it but if we do, we will be a little prepared! In Texas, we do NOT have basements so our safe areas are usually under stairs or in an interior closet/bathroom. We have been pretty lucky where we live in North Texas but I’ve spent several times in our safe area during serious tornado warnings. One time when
my daughter was just 7 mths old I had her in my lap in our under the
stairs teeny tiny closet, along with my 90 pound yellow lab who was
scared to death! Luckily we didn’t get it bad but we did hear that
horrible train sound of a tornado. It was very scary!
Do you have a safe area? Are you prepared for an emergency? Comment and let me know what you keep in your safe room.

Great article! Thanks for the reminder, I forgot that I need to restock our emergency kit. The kids have borrowed from it too many times. 🙂 We do have a basement and we have a storage room that I keep our things in. Like you I sure hope we never need it but it is really nice to know that it is there.
