The Day I Gave Up My Favorite Morning Drink

I’m not a coffee person. I actually hate coffee. I hate the smell, the looks, how hot it is. Yuck. (Sorry to all you coffee drinkers out there!)  My morning drink?  A Diet Dr. Pepper.

I started drinking a Diet Dr. Pepper when I was in middle school, because my mom drank one.  It was so refreshing and tasted sooo good!  My love for Diet Dr. Pepper continued all through high school and even college. It helped get me up every morning to start teaching rug-rats for 14 and 1/2 years. I had one every single day. I even drank a mini one every morning with both pregnancies. I knew it wasn’t the best for me but it was my coffee. I only drank one a day until I stopped cold turkey. I decided to do a Dr. Oz 12 day diet boost. It was no sodas, dairy, sugar, white- basically no to everything that was good! The big no-no was no artificial sweetener, like aspartame.  I decided I could try to live without a diet drink for 12 days. One Friday morning I got up and didn’t have a Diet Dr. Pepper. Guess what?  I survived. So, I did it again the next day, and the next.  Finally, I had made it through 12 days of no sugary drinks! From that time on I knew I could keep going. Guess what?  I have! That was 2 months ago.  I have to admit, I have occasionally had a real Coke (Sonic Cokes are THE BEST), but no diet drinks whatsoever!  I’m not going to lie and say I don’t think about my Dr. Peppers anymore, because I do. When my husband is drinking one they look so good! But, I pass and keep drinking my water.

I bought myself a big tumbler water jug that holds 24 oz.  I fill it up several times a day and try to remember to drink even when I’m not thirsty!  I did buy Hydro Boost Water flavor that I allow myself to use maybe once a day if I’m feeling a little worn out. It’s grape flavored and so yummy. A huge benefit for me that I’ve noticed is that my migraines have significantly gone down. I’ve been a migraine sufferer since middle school. I do still get them but they are much better. Also, I had a pretty large cyst on the back of my hand that my Dr. told me would need to be removed. It’s gone. Like totally not there at all. Gone!  So nice! I feel so much better knowing that awful aspartame is out of my system!

{update: April 2015:  I’ve been without my morning Diet Dr. Pepper for a whole year now! I do drink an occasional diet coke with a meal but it’s very rare. I also keep Ice Tea (my favorite is Chick fil a tea) as a special treat and in moderation!}
