Gak is such a super simple hands-on activity to make to keep the kids occupied. It can be a fun science project and is easy to make together!
We love home made activities that don’t take a lot of time to make but keep the kids occupied. This is one of those activities, Gak! Gak is a great mixture of just 2 things and you might have them at home already. Gak is sometimes times called “Flubber”. I’ve even made it as a science experiment at school before with my elementary aged kids. My kids love it!
Start off by emptying the glue into a bowl. This day I had (2) 4 oz bottles of glue. Next fill up the empty bottles with warm water. (Must be warm). Shake the bottles and empty those into the glue mixture. Next put about 1/4 cup of warm water in a measuring bowl. Mix in 2 tbs of borax. Mix well. (Add food coloring to this mixture if you want your GAK to have a color). Once the borax is mixed in dump into the glue. This is the fun part! Mix well using your hands. Really let your kids get in and squish it all together. After 10 minutes of squishing I did have some extra liquid that I just dumped out leaving the GAK in the bowl. It does take a bit to get the good consistency. The GAK should not be too much of a liquid. If so, then add a bit more borax. Make sure you used warm water, that’s the trick. I’ve tried with regular water and it didn’t work! We left our Gak white today but making it fun colors is also a neat thing to do too.
My mom is a former preschool teacher so she has tons of these sea creatures and animals. The kids LOVE adding animals and making an entire scene. I love that this is a great ‘quiet’ activity. It can be for kids of all ages. We did this on our beach vacation when younger kids napped. The older kids (ages 8 and 11) loved this Gak too! If you store it properly in a gallon bag or container with a lid it will last over a month. Sometimes you might need to add a little more borax if it gets too firm.
Do your kids have a favorite quiet activity?

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve seen it before, but should give it a try this summer to entertain my kids.

This looks like fun and interesting to try too but I don’t know where to find Borax here in our area… Where did you buy yours? Thanks! 🙂

It’s found in the laundry area of the store. A lot of people make their own detergent now so that’s usually what they use. If you can’t seem to find it, I’d look at prices on amazon. It’s worth it bc you can use it for lots of things!
