I’ve been a long time sufferer of the dreadful migraines. I can remember getting them in high school and college and basically having to just try and go to bed. Cold washrag, dark, quiet room, meds. All different kinds of meds. I saw neurologists, was on special birth control, food diets, nothing was a cure. Finally the only thing that made a true difference for me was seeing a chiropractor. I was set up on a pretty intense therapy plan but it did help.

I’ve done a lot of research over the years about migraines and what to do. I am always researching and looking for new ideas or suggestions. Here are some things that DO work for me.
Oils: Lavender/Peppermint: Oils have become very popular lately. There are several good ones that I like. I’m not brand picky at all. A few drops on your temples and feet/wrists does help to relax me.
Food Diet: It’s a good idea to keep a food diary to see if you notice any one food that you are eating that can be causing the migraines. These are some high triggers: bananas, chocolate, dairy, MSG, wine, or other alcohol.
Scalp Massage/Neck Exercises: My Dr gave me a few neck exercises (You can even google this to find more) to do when I notice a headache coming on. This can help. Sometimes yoga can help de-stressing!
Have regular sleep hours: This can be hard but it’s best to try and get the same amount (at least 7 hours) and go to bed/wake up around the same time. Too much sleep or not enough can be harmful!
No skipping meals: Being extra hungry can cause a migraine. It’s best to eat regular meals.
No perfume/scented lotions. I have to steer clear of perfumes and sometimes perfumes friends wear. I love the smell of lots of perfumes but for some reason my body can’t handle it. I have to keep all make up and lotions/shampoos with a mild or non smell. It’s really sad but it helps in the long run.
Stay out of the sun: Being in the sun too long always brings on a migraine. I’ve learned the hard way several times with this. It’s unfortunate but I know now that I just can’t be outside in the hot sun for too long. I get dehydrated fast and it triggers awful migraines.
When I do feel a migraine coming on I try the neck exercises, drink extra water, (A friend said drinking gatorade helps at the start of one coming on!!) and then do the oils if doesn’t help. I do love my Migraine Hat. It does help ease the throbbing when I can’t just sleep it off. If a migraine gets worse (and they usually do for me) I have some medications that do help me. Sometimes they give side effects so I try and go to bed when I can. With 2 little kids that’s hard to do. My basic rule is that I NEVER leave home without my meds.
If you are one of the lucky ones that has NEVER had a migraine be so thankful! I think people that don’t know tend to not believe how bad they are. Thinking that it’s just a headache. It’s not! I’ve had so many wonderful days/nights/events spoiled because of an awful migraine. I’ve missed work and missed so many fun activities with my family. I actually had some this past weekend and I had to go to my bedroom and be in a quiet room while my family was eating dinner. It was miserable! When I don’t have a migraine I am so thankful and thank God for not having one, but I always stay prepared for when I do get one.

Oucchh! Though I don't suffer from migraine, I have some friends who do. And it's hard to see them like this when they get an attack. I shall suggest your remedies to them. Thanks! 🙂
August 5, 2014 at 11:46 amMigraines are horrible! Both my son and I get them. I feel for you having them with 2 little ones. It is bad enough having them let alone having to take care of your kids and not be able to go to bed. Great post!
June 10, 2015 at 1:59 pmHow do you deal with them Tina? Have you found a good medicine routine that works for you? I’m so hoping my kids don’t get them like I do!
June 10, 2015 at 2:23 pmI have also suffered from migraines since the birth of my last child who is now 23! I’ve tried some of these and have some success. It’s usually the dark room, cool rag and the meds.
June 10, 2015 at 3:28 pmI have atypical migraines and I use a combo of a lot of things. I like using the peppermint oil in lotion (unscented like Cetaphil) and then having my husband massage my shoulders and neck. I also get adjusted, drink ice water, take a nap, drink some caffeine. Nothing seems to help completely but I get a bit of relief.
June 10, 2015 at 5:44 pmGreat idea on rubbing lotion mixed with peppermint. Thanks for sharing!
June 10, 2015 at 7:07 pmI started suffering from migraines back when I was fourteen. Essential oils are the best! I use doTERRA and they have an awesome roll-on blend called PastTense. It’s even stronger than the lavender and peppermint by themselves . . . Thanks for the info! I think a lot of people suffer with severe migraines and they’re always afraid to sound like wimps . . . Migraines are so much worse than regular headaches, but it’s great to know that there are some remedies out there!
June 10, 2015 at 7:04 pmThanks Melody. I’d love to try your blend Past Tense. I’ll message you!
